The Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test (IAAT) is given to 6th graders in Fairfax County Public Schools to determine placement into Algebra 1 honors in middle school Math. The Iowa Pre-Algebra Aptitude Test is given to 5th graders in Loudoun County Public Schools.
BrightNup Academy has a 4-month long IAAT preparation class that goes over entire concepts of the IAAT test while developing the problem-solving skills. The program also provides seven full-length mock IAAT tests that help students master time management and test taking skills. Weekly worksheets are provided for students to practice math problems at home.
The session covers the following:
Pre-Algebraic Number Skills and Concepts – The items on this subtest measure a student’s computational skills, understanding of mathematical concepts and the ability to solve mathematics problems.
Interpreting Mathematical Information – The items on this part are based upon information presented in graphs or upon definitions of mathematical terms or operations. The items assess how well a student can learn new material presented in graphs or text.
Representing Relationships – For each of the exercises in this part of the test, the student must find the rule that represents the given numerical relationship. Some of the items present the relationship in table form while others present the relationship in verbal form.
Using Symbols – The last part measures how well students understand some of the important symbols of algebra and how they are used.
